Selecting the Right Cycling Kit

Cycling is many things to different people, ranging from a high end sports activity to an easy method to keep fit through to an eco-friendly way to travel or simply a great way to have some fun. Today's bicycles are a far cry from the old models of yesteryear, with some top of the range bikes costing as much as a decent second-hand car or motorbike.

It isn't just the cycles themselves that have changed though, as cyclists can now choose from a wide range of products including clothes, safety equipment and many other bits of specialist cycling kit.

For those interested matching their cycling attire to the premium bicycle, here is everything you need to know about selecting the right kit.

Safety first

There are quite a few on-going campaigns which revolve around trying to make cycling safer in our city streets. Although this involves things such as good cycle lane routes and raising awareness amongst other road users, there are also various safety measures cyclists can take.

Having a decent safety helmet is one major way you can reduce your risk of causing head injuries if you are involved in an accident of any kind. There are many different lightweight models which offer excellent protection and you can also buy helmet covers to prevent rain entering the vents in bad weather.

Be seen

Hi-visibility jackets are commonplace today and part of many countries legal requirements for road users of all kinds. A waterproof hi-visibility top not only makes sure that other drivers can see you but also keep you protected against the elements.

Body armour

Although it might sound strange, lightweight 'armour' for various parts of the body has long been a part of motorcycling and is becoming increasingly popular with pedal-powered riders too.

Elbow and knee pads are used to prevent bruising or damage in case of a fall but things can be taken several steps further with items such as hard shell armour protection for the torso which can prevent spinal injuries in the worst cases. Specialist neck braces are also available which allow full movement of the head but protect against the neck or back being compacted during a collision.

Looking good

Of course cycle wear isn't just about safety; it is also concerned with looking good. The 'lycra road warrior' image is a bit of a cliché but also something that most cyclists would rather avoid. It's therefore important to choose clothing that is both functional but reflects you own dress sense and style.

Hands and feet

Above all, cycling is a demanding physical activity and it is the hands and feet that bear the brunt of it. Fingerless mitts are great for providing protection to the nerves in your palm and forearm in hot weather. In colder conditions, full-fingered gloves are an essential item to keep the winter chill at bay.

Choosing the right footwear for cycling is also essential and that includes socks which need to be thin and highly breathable in the summer and waterproof in winter.
